New Zealand’s parliament has unanimously approved a bill to impose economic sanctions on Russia. The new law targets individuals associated with Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, including Russian oligarchs. It would also allow the New Zealand authority to freeze assets and prevent the arrival of luxury yachts or aircraft.
Unlike many countries that had already imposed sanctions, New Zealand’s laws previously did not allow the government to implement meaningful measures unless they were part of a broader UN effort. Lawmakers have suggested this will prevent New Zealand from becoming a safe haven for Russian oligarchs looking to evade sanctions elsewhere.
